Party-size traps at hard Disney World restaurants (why 4 shows when 5 is gone)

You’re booked for Walt Disney World. The hard table is for your whole group — five, six, seven — and when you search that size, nothing’s there. Drop one guest in the search and party of 4 suddenly flashes times.

You’re not imagining it. At places like Cinderella’s Royal Table, ‘Ohana, and Space 220, party size changes what Disney shows. This post is the calm path for that trap — not a same-day scramble tip, and not affiliated with Disney.

Why party of 4 can show when 5 is gone

Hard restaurants don’t keep one shared pile of “open seats.” Availability is tied to party size (and meal, and date) — closer to table configuration than a single open pool. So a larger true size can be empty while a smaller search still lights up.

That’s the trap: booking the smaller size doesn’t finish the trip. You still travel with the people who didn’t fit the search.

planDisney answers about Cinderella’s Royal Table have long guided large parties this way: when a full-size table won’t book, try smaller overlapping reservations (often within about 15 minutes), arrive early, and ask Cast Members to seat you together or nearby — which may be impossible or nearby-only (planDisney CRT party of 7; planDisney larger parties). Split seating is a request, not a promise (planDisney seating / split groups).

CRT is the worked example here because the clearest primary guidance is CRT-specific. The same party-size inventory pattern shows up at other hard tables in the same class — including Space 220 and ‘Ohana — even when the exact planDisney wording differs.

What to do first

1. Search your true party size on Disney’s site or app for the dates you still need. Don’t thrash every size randomly just to see green.
2. Check cancellations yourself for a few days. Hard ADRs move when people cancel; new openings can appear close-in.
3. If you hold a temporary smaller ADR, treat it as a bridge. You still need a path to the size you actually travel with.
4. If you split into overlapping smaller reservations, planDisney’s CRT guidance usually means two My Disney Experience accounts for near-same times, arrive early, and ask — seating together stays a request (planDisney larger parties; planDisney seating / split groups).
5. Keep a backup ADR you’ll actually enjoy if the hard table never reopens for your true size.

What not to assume

Do not invent Disney policy. Especially: don’t assume a toddler “counts differently,” that a party-of-4 hold covers five, or that any particular modify-down tip is official booking policy. If Disney’s own flow doesn’t show your true party, treat that as the truth for now.
