What usually happens
Hard restaurants don’t keep one shared pile of “open seats.” Availability is tied to party size (and meal, and date). So when a larger party reservation disappears, a smaller party size can still look open while your true size does not.
That’s why the wrong-date cancel stings: you didn’t just lose a time slot — you may have lost the exact party size inventory you needed.

- Check cancellations yourself for a few days — CRT moves when people cancel. New openings can appear close-in.
- If you temporarily book a smaller party, treat it as a bridge, not the finish line. Policies and offerings change. When in doubt, use Disney’s site and app — not a tip that has no primary receipt.
